When it comes to sending money to India, there are a few options available, but not all are created equal. Here’s how they compare, and why RemitFIRST2India from IDFC FIRST Bank stands out.
Wire transfers use the global SWIFT network to move money between banks. While they’re a well-established method, they often come with high fees, variable exchange rates, and longer processing times. Plus, the process can be paperwork-heavy and not always transparent.
Online transfer agencies offer more convenience, allowing you to send money from your computer or phone. They’re generally faster and cheaper than wire transfers, but fees can still vary depending on the provider, and service levels can be inconsistent.
This old-school method is still in use for those without access to digital platforms. While secure, money orders take time to process, require physical handling, and may involve trips to cashing centers or banks, making them less practical today.
Not Offered by IDFC FIRST Bank.
Demand drafts and cheques in foreign currency are another traditional method. However, they can take several days or even weeks to clear, and typically involve manual submission and handling charges.
Not Offered by IDFC FIRST Bank.

The Cross Border Add Funds service allows eligible IDFC FIRST Bank NRE and NRO customers based in the UK or Europe to add money to their IDFC FIRST Bank accounts using a secure and regulated Open Banking payment process.
Customers can transfer funds directly from their own overseas bank account to their NRE or NRO account in India without using traditional wire transfers or physically visiting a branch. The journey is fully digital, fast, and designed for self-to-self transfers, ensuring convenience, transparency, and security.
The Cross Border Add Funds service can be used only by existing IDFC FIRST Bank NRE or NRO customers who are residents of the UK or Europe and hold a bank account in those regions.
The service supports self-to-self transfers only, which means:
• The overseas bank account used to add funds must be in the same name as the IDFC FIRST Bank NRE or NRO account holder
• Thirdparty transfers or payments from someone else’s bank account are not permitted
You can add funds only to your own IDFC FIRST Bank NRE or NRO account using the Cross Border Add Funds service.
Only your eligible NRE and/or NRO accounts with IDFC FIRST Bank will be displayed for selection to ensure that all transfers remain self-to-self. Other account types, joint accounts where you are not the primary holder, or thirdparty accounts will not be shown and cannot be funded using this service.
The minimum amount you can transfer using the Cross Border Add Funds service is:
• EUR 250 for transfers initiated in Euros, or
• GBP 250 for transfers initiated in British Pounds.
Transactions below this minimum amount are not supported and cannot be processed through this service.
IDFC FIRST Bank does not levy any transfer fees, processing fees, or correspondent bank charges for these transactions. The service is designed to be fully transparent, so the amount you see at the time of booking is the amount that will be credited to your NRE or NRO account, subject to successful debit and checks.
The foreign exchange (FX) rate is locked in at the time you confirm the transaction during the Cross Border Add Funds journey so you are protected from FX fluctuations.
Once you confirm and authorise the payment, the displayed FX rate remains valid only if the debit from your overseas UK or Europe bank account is successful. If the debit fails due to insufficient funds, authentication issues, or technical reasons, the transaction is cancelled and the FX rate is not applied.
Yes. You will be shown the exact amount that will be credited to your IDFC FIRST Bank NRE or NRO account before you complete and confirm the transaction.
The receiving amount displayed at the time of booking is guaranteed, provided the debit from your overseas UK or Europe bank account is successful and all required checks are completed. Since there are no transfer or correspondent charges, the credited amount will match what is shown to you during the transaction journey.
To make a payment using the Cross Border Add Funds service, you will be securely redirected to a Licensed Open Banking Partner after initiating the transaction on the IDFC FIRST Bank platform. On the partner’s page, you will:
1. Select your UK or Europe bank account
2. Authenticate yourself directly with your bank using Strong Customer Authentication (SCA), such as mobile app approval, OTP, or bank login, depending on your bank’s process
3. Approve the debit for the specified amount
The authentication and approval happen entirely within your bank’s secure environment. Your banking credentials are never shared with IDFC FIRST Bank or the Open Banking Partner.
Once the debit is successfully authorised, the transaction proceeds automatically for credit to your NRE or NRO account.
In most cases, the funds added through the Cross Border Add Funds service are credited to your IDFC FIRST Bank NRE or NRO account within 5 minutes of a successful payment authorisation.
In rare or exceptional situations such as additional verification checks, temporary system issues, or bank processing delays the credit may take up to one working day. These delays are uncommon, and customers are typically informed if additional time is required.
Your Cross Border Add Funds transaction may be rejected due to one or more of the following reasons:
• Name mismatch: The name on your overseas UK/Europe bank account does not exactly match the name on your IDFC FIRST Bank NRE or NRO account
• Regulatory or compliance checks: The transaction did not pass required AML (AntiMoney Laundering) or sanctions screening
• Inactive or restricted account: Your NRE or NRO account is inactive, blocked, or restricted for transactions
• Insufficient balance: There were not enough funds in your overseas bank account at the time of debit
• Authentication failure: The Open Banking authentication or approval was not completed successfully
• Technical issues: Temporary system, connectivity, or bankside issues during transaction processing
If a transaction is rejected, no funds are credited to your IDFC FIRST Bank account.
In cases where the amount has already been debited from your overseas bank account, funds will be credited back to the same sending account as per standard process. If not, you may reach out to your assigned Relationship Manager (RM) for further assistance and resolution.
If your Cross Border Add Funds transaction fails, any amount that has been debited from your overseas UK or Europe bank account will be automatically refunded to the same sending account.
• On working days, refunds are typically processed on the same day
• If the transaction fails on a bank holiday or nonworking day, the refund is processed on the next business day
No funds are credited to your IDFC FIRST Bank NRE or NRO account in case of a failed transaction. The refund process is automatic and if the refunded amount is not received within the expected timeframe, you may contact your assigned Relationship Manager or reach out through the Help & Support section.
When you use the Cross Border Add Funds service, the transaction is processed through a Licensed Overseas Open Banking Partner. As a result, the name of the overseas partner may appear on your IDFC FIRST Bank NRE or NRO account statement for the credited transaction.
This is normal and expected for crossborder Open Banking–enabled payments. The partner acts as a regulated payment facilitator, while the funds are credited securely to your IDFC FIRST Bank account.
Yes, the Cross Border Add Funds service is highly secure and built on regulated Open Banking standards.
When you make a payment, you authenticate directly with your overseas bank using Strong Customer Authentication (SCA). Your banking credentials - such as login details, passwords, or PINs - are never shared with IDFC FIRST Bank or the overseas Open Banking Partner.
Both IDFC FIRST Bank and the Licensed Open Banking Partner operate within strict regulatory, data protection, and security frameworks.
To use the Cross Border Add Funds service, most of your required information is automatically fetched from IDFC FIRST Bank’s records like:
Full name
Residential address
Contact details
Unique Identification Number
You only need to review and confirm these details during the transaction journey. No additional documentation or manual data entry is required in most cases.
No. The Cross Border Add Funds service does not support transfers to other individuals or thirdparty accounts in line with regulatory and compliance requirements.
This service is strictly limited to selftoself transfers, which means the overseas UK or Europe bank account used to add funds must belong to the same person who holds the IDFC FIRST Bank NRE or NRO account.
If any of your personal or account details are incorrect or outdated, you should update your information with IDFC FIRST Bank before initiating a Cross Border Add Funds transaction.
Accurate details - such as your name, address, or identification information - are required to successfully complete regulatory, compliance, and verification checks. If the details on record do not match your overseas bank account information, the transaction may be delayed or rejected.
You can update your details through IDFC FIRST Bank’s designated channels or by contacting your assigned Relationship Manager (RM).
The Cross Border Add Funds service supports a wide range of UK and Europe banks that are enabled for Open Banking payments.
The uptodate list of supported banks is shown on the Licensed Open Banking Partner’s payment page during the transaction journey. Based on your location and availability, you will be able to select your bank from the displayed options at the time of making the payment.
If you need any assistance with the Cross Border Add Funds service, you can reach out through the Help & Support section available within the IDFC FIRST Bank mobile app or online banking platform.
For personalised support, especially in cases related to transaction status, refunds, or accountspecific queries, you may also contact your assigned Relationship Manager.
