The IDFC FIRST Bank Shwetdhara program is a dairy productivity and rural livelihood initiative that supports smallholder women dairy farmers with better practices, improved herd management, and dependable extension services. The program aims to increase milk productivity at the household level and help rural families build more stable and predictable incomes.
Despite accounting for nearly a quarter of global milk production, India continues to struggle with low productivity at the smallholder level. Challenges such as limited potential of local cattle breeds, inconsistent access to quality veterinary care, and inadequate nutrition management persist. The lack of integrated, reliable lastmile services further constrains the ability of dairy-dependent households to enhance productivity and secure sustainable income growth.
Shwetdhara operates across 880 villages and reaches more than 70,000 farmers across Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh. Through structured training, doorstep advisory, and community-led demonstrations, the initiative helps women adopt simple, proven practices that boost milk yield and reduce avoidable losses.
The program is implemented with leading development partners. These include Ananda Foundation, BAIF Livelihoods, End Poverty, and India Grameen Services (IGS).
Since the commencement of this program in 2017, more than 6,650 structured trainings have been delivered to disseminate best practices on dairy management. These trainings focus on key aspects such as breed improvement, animal health, and balanced nutrition. The capacity‑building efforts are complemented with mechanisms that promote positive and scientifically proven behavior change among farmers. To date, the program has facilitated 2,00,000+ artificial inseminations and provided 70,333 doorstep animal health treatments, along with region‑specific feed and fodder support and timely medicine supply for cattle. A strong emphasis is placed on women’s empowerment through the promotion of Gram Sakhis—village‑level trained female volunteers who disseminate knowledge on effective cattle management practices. 1,082 Gram Sakhis have been trained so far, who actively support communities across multiple villages. Collective outreach efforts, including 50,000+ farmer meetings and awareness sessions, have significantly strengthened grassroots engagement. These initiatives have contributed to tangible improvements, including a 20% increase in milk productivity and an ~18% increase in farmer incomes through improved market access and collective bargaining.
