As a part of the Shwetdhara Program, IDFC FIRST Bank has partnered with Vrutti and End Poverty to build three Farmer Producer Organizations across rural areas of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Karnataka. The program aims to build capacities of small and marginal dairy farmers regarding dairy management activities such as increasing the productivity of milch animals through breed improvement techniques and ensuring good health of the animals with a nutritious diet.
Furthermore, the program assists rural women in becoming entrepreneurs in order to build sustainable business models. Training is given to the women on topics such as business development, financial management, setting up forward links, cattle management, and best practices in business. In addition, they are encouraged to form their own Farmer Producer Organizations.
The program is currently operational in 454 villages across 3 states and, this year we plan on expanding our scope to another 300+ villages.
Since the commencement of this program in 2017, more than 5000 community level trainings have been conducted to disseminate best practices on dairy management. These trainings focus on key aspects of dairy management like breed improvement, animal health and balanced nutrition. The capacity building exercise is complemented with mechanisms that promote positive and scientifically proven behavior change among farmers.91,300+ individuals have been reached via this program through services like artificial insemination, cattle treatment, region-specific feed and fodder services and medicines supply for the cattle. Additionally, the program empowers women to take on the role of Gram Sakhis. Gram Sakhis are a cadre of village-level female volunteers trained to disseminate information on effective cattle management practices. Over 5000 community trainings and 18,805 cattle treatments have been conducted by Gram Sakhis who cover 454 villages across 3 states. 21 Pashu Vikas Kendras (PVK) have been established which act as resource centers and are operated by veterinary doctors and extension officers. To date, Artificial Insemination Technicians (AITs) engaged in the program have provided more than 18,000 breed improvement services.
