Personal Loan
Loan processing fees are usually deducted from the loan amount before disbursal, so the amount credited to the borrower’s account is lower than the approved sum. Some lenders like IDFC FIRST Bank charge this fee over and above the loan amount, so the full amount reaches the borrower's account. The only exception is when you choose to borrow the full approved loan amount instead of a lower amount. You can also get zero processing fee benefit on select loan amounts.

Question |
Answer |
What is a processing fee? |
A one-time fee charged for processing a loan application. |
How much is it? |
Usually 0%–3.5% of the loan amount. |
Is GST applicable? |
Yes, 18% GST applies on the fee. |
Is it deducted from the loan? |
Usually yes, though some lenders charge it separately. |
Processing fees typically cover:
Document verification
Identity and address verification
Credit bureau checks
Income assessment
Loan underwriting
Account creation
Loan disbursal setup
Most lenders deduct the processing fee from the loan amount before disbursal, following this path:
Loan approved → Fee worked out on the approved amount → Fee deducted from the approved amount → Net loan amount credited to the bank account
Because of this standard setup, a borrower approved for a ₹5,00,000 loan with a 2% processing fee will have ₹10,000 deducted upfront, receiving a net amount of approximately ₹4,90,000 in their bank account.
However, some lenders like IDFC FIRST Bank for their FIRSTmoney personal loan charge the fee over and above their loan amount, unless you withdraw the full approved loan amount.
For example, if you receive an offer of ₹5,00,000, you have the option to withdraw a lower amount. Let’s say, if you decide to withdraw ₹3,00,000, the processing fee will be charged separately on it. However, if you decide to withdraw the full loan offer of ₹5,00,000, then the fee will be deducted from the loan amount itself.
With FIRSTmoney personal loan, you can also avail zero processing fee benefits on select loan amounts.
Key takeaway: If the processing fee is deducted upfront, the amount credited to your account will be lower than your approved loan amount. Always check whether the lender deducts the fee before disbursal or charges it separately.
Although it is a one-time charge, the processing fee can significantly affect your actual borrowing cost, especially for higher loan amounts.
It matters because:
You may receive less money than your approved loan amount if the fee is deducted before disbursal.
A lower interest rate may not always compensate for a higher processing fee.
Comparing only interest rates may lead to choosing a more expensive loan overall.
GST applies to the processing fee as a financial service charge at 18%, separate from the loan principal and interest. Most lenders charge GST over and above the processing fee rather than building it into the rate. If a bank quotes a 2% fee, the 18% GST is added on top. In case of FIRSTmoney, the processing fee is 0% to 3.5% of loan amount (incl. GST) (0 processing fee is available on select loan amounts).
Personal loan processing fees vary by applicant profile and lender policies. The table below shows the fee range and its effect on the received amount, assuming a standard setup where the fee and its 18% GST are deducted upfront from the disbursed sum.

Processing fee and interest rate affect your loan cost in different ways. The table below breaks down the difference:
Aspect |
Processing fee |
Interest rate |
When charged |
Once, at loan disbursal |
Across the entire loan tenure |
Amount basis |
Fixed percentage (0% to 3.5%) |
Annual percentage on outstanding balance |
Effect on EMI |
No direct effect |
Changes the EMI amount directly |
Effect on total cost |
One-time upfront cost |
Adds up over the full tenure |
Processing fees affect your upfront costs, while the interest rate dictates long-term costs. A low interest rate paired with a high fee can still make a loan expensive overall.
Compare rates and fees: Check interest rates and processing fees across lenders, as even a 1% gap changes total borrowing cost.
Improve credit score: A stronger score often brings lower fees and better interest rates.
Avoid prepayment costs: Pick a loan with zero foreclosure charges like FIRSTmoney to save more.

Personal loan processing fees are a one-time charge, and most lenders deduct them from your loan amount rather than billing them separately. Reviewing these fees and applicable GST provides a clearer view of your total borrowing cost. If you prefer receiving your full approved amount, consider the FIRSTmoney personal loan by IDFC FIRST Bank; it offers processing fees charged above the loan amount as long as you withdraw less than the full approved loan offer. You can also enjoy zero foreclosure charges and disbursal within 10 minutes after approval.
The fee is calculated as a percentage of your approved loan amount, usually 0% to 3.5%, based on the lender’s policy and your credit profile. GST at 18% is then added on top.
Most lenders deduct it from the disbursed amount, while some lenders charge it over and above. On FIRSTmoney personal loan by IDFC FIRST Bank, for instance, the fee is charged over and above the approved amount unless you withdraw the full approved loan amount.
Yes. Banks generally charge 18% GST on the processing fee. In case of FIRSTmoney, the processing fee is 0% to 3.5% of loan amount (incl. GST) (0 processing fee is available on select loan amounts).
