The Great Himalayan National Park Conservation Area is among the many reasons to visit Himachal Pradesh. Located in Kullu District, this park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. This site is spread across four valleys – Jiwa Nala, Sainj, Tirthan and Parvati, and is home to some exotic flora and fauna. You can trek through this national park, interact with local communities, and become one with nature.
Humayun's Tomb in India's capital city was built in 1570 and was made a UNESCO Heritage Site in 1993. This tomb is particularly significant as it was the first garden tomb built on the Indian subcontinent. In fact, it was the inspiration behind the Taj Mahal, one of the most popular UNESCO Heritage Sites in India. Visit Humayun's Tomb to witness Mughal architecture at its finest. One of the best-preserved ancient sites, Dholavira, a Harappan city in Gujarat, was occupied between 3000 BCE and 1500 BCE. This UNESCO World Heritage Site in India contains a fortified city and a cemetery. The complex has evidence of a sophisticated water management system, social governance, art and culture, trade, etc. The site shows how ahead of their time the people of the Indian subcontinent were. One can also marvel at flocks of migratory flamingos near Dholavira.
Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, Kaziranga National Park in Assam is the place to be if you want to see the iconic Indian one-horned rhinoceros. Not only is this park home to over 2000 rhinoceros, but it is also a breeding ground for elephants, tigers, bears, panthers, water buffalo, swamp deer, and hundreds of migratory birds. In addition to going on a safari in the Kaziranga National Park, also take time to visit the tribal villages to soak in the local culture.
