Credit Card
International credit cards give you a convenient way to pay abroad and on global websites while earning applicable rewards and travel benefits. However, you may end up paying additional charges if you are unaware of currency conversion costs, forex markup and other fees. This guide explains how international credit cards work, which charges to check and how simple choices, such as paying in the local currency, can help you manage international spending better.
An international credit card is simply a credit card enabled for international payments. It lets you make payments in India and other countries. You can use it at overseas hotels, restaurants, stores and other merchants that accept your card network. You can also use it from India to pay on international websites.
These transactions are processed through global card networks such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Diners Club.
For example, if you use your card to pay $100 at a hotel in the US, the payment is first made in US dollars. Your card network then converts the amount into Indian rupees using its applicable exchange rate. This converted amount is added to your credit card statement.
A card that is restricted to domestic transactions will not work at an overseas merchant or on a website that processes payments in a foreign currency.
Here’s how you set up your card for international transactions:
Apply for an international credit card: If you do not have a card, compare the eligibility requirements, annual fee, forex markup, rewards and travel benefits before applying.
Check if your card supports international payments: If you already have a credit card, check whether it can be used for international transactions.
Activate international usage: International payments may not be active automatically. You can enable them through your bank’s mobile app or internet banking.
Choose how you want to use the card: You can enable international payments for websites, stores, contactless payments and ATM withdrawals. Only activate the options you need.
Set your international transaction limit: Choose a limit that covers your expected payment. Avoid setting a much higher limit than you need.
Here’s how the process usually goes:
Payment processing: The payment is sent to your bank through a card network such as Visa or Mastercard.
Verification: Your bank checks your credit limit, international payment settings and security details before approving the transaction.
Currency conversion: The card network converts the foreign currency amount into Indian rupees using its applicable exchange rate.
Additional charges: Your bank may add a forex markup to the converted amount. GST is then charged on the forex markup.
Final billing: The final INR amount appears on your credit card statement along with the merchant’s name and applicable charges.
While travelling abroad: Pay at hotels, restaurants, stores, airports and transport services. You can also book flights, accommodation and rental cars.
On international websites: Shop on global websites that accept your card. The foreign-currency amount is converted into INR and added to your statement.
For subscriptions and education: Pay for streaming services, software, online courses and university fees. Some payments may not earn rewards.
For business expenses: Pay for eligible international tools, services and other business expenses.
At the time of payment: Tap, swipe, insert or enter your card details. The payment is approved and converted into INR.
Choose the local currency: If asked to pay in INR or the local currency, choose the local currency. Paying in INR may lead to additional Dynamic Currency Conversion charges.
The price shown by the merchant may not be the final amount you pay. International transactions can include forex markup, GST and other charges. You should understand each cost before using your card.
Forex markup is an additional percentage charged by the card issuer on transactions made in a foreign currency.
For example, a card with a 3.5% forex markup will add ₹3,500 to international spending worth ₹1 lakh. This charge is added after the foreign-currency amount is converted into Indian rupees.
All IDFC FIRST Bank credit cards offer zero forex markup. This means the bank does not add a forex markup to eligible international transactions. The card network’s applicable exchange rate will still be used for the currency conversion.
GST can apply to the forex markup charged by your card issuer.
Suppose you spend the equivalent of ₹1 lakh internationally using a card with a 3.5% forex markup. The markup will be ₹3,500. GST at 18% on this markup will add another ₹630. Your total additional cost will be approximately ₹4,130.
A card with zero forex markup removes the ₹3,500 markup and the GST that would have applied to it. This does not remove the card network’s currency conversion rate.
Dynamic Currency Conversion, commonly called DCC, gives you the option to pay in Indian rupees at an overseas merchant.
The INR amount may be easier to understand, but it is converted using the rate offered by the merchant or its payment provider. This rate can include an additional margin or conversion fee.
If you are in the US, pay in US dollars. If you are in France, pay in euros. Always choose the merchant’s local currency and let your card network handle the conversion.
International ATM withdrawals can include a cash withdrawal fee, interest and a fee charged by the ATM operator. Interest on a credit card cash withdrawal may start from the date of the transaction.
You may also have to pay finance charges if you do not clear your card balance on time. Late-payment charges can apply if you miss the due date. Some merchants and payment platforms may also add their own convenience fees.
An international credit card with zero forex markup can actually help you save a lot on foreign currency payments. Apart from zero forex markup, you also get rewards, lounge access and other travel benefits. Let’s get into the details.
Zero forex markup: A zero-forex markup credit card does not charge an extra forex fee on foreign currency payments. All IDFC FIRST Bank credit cards offer zero forex markup. This can save you approximately ₹4,130 on every ₹1 lakh spent internationally compared to a card charging 3.5% forex markup plus GST.
Reward points and cashback: You can earn reward points or cashback on eligible international transactions. You can redeem these rewards for eligible vouchers, gift cards or other benefits, depending on the card.
Airport lounge access: Depending on the card you get, you can have domestic or international airport lounge access.
Travel and lifestyle benefits: Your card may offer travel rewards, dining discounts, hotel offers, insurance benefits, golf privileges or roadside assistance.
Security and spending controls: You can switch international payments on or off and set transaction limits through your bank’s app or internet banking. You can also block your card if it is lost or you notice an unknown payment.
To pay internationally, you have a few options, a credit card, a forex card or a debit card. Let's compare these options.

Best suited for |
Travel, online shopping and regular international payments |
Travellers who want to preload a fixed budget |
Occasional spending directly from a bank account |
In short, a forex card can help you control your budget because you load a fixed amount before travelling. An international credit card gives you access to a credit limit and may offer rewards and travel benefits. A debit card takes the money directly from your bank account.
Pay in the local currency: Choose US dollars in the US or euros in France instead of INR to avoid additional DCC costs.
Check the forex markup: A 3.5% markup plus GST can add approximately ₹4,130 to every ₹1 lakh spent internationally.
Avoid ATM withdrawals: Credit card cash withdrawals may attract withdrawal fees, interest and ATM operator charges.
Enable international usage: Turn on only the transaction types you need and set a suitable spending limit.
Track and repay: Review transaction alerts, report unfamiliar payments and pay the total amount due on time to avoid interest and late-payment charges.
The best international credit card is the one that matches how you plan to use it. A frequent traveller will need different benefits from someone who mainly pays for international subscriptions.

Before choosing an international credit card in India, ask:
What forex markup does the card charge?
What is the annual fee?
What are the lounge access conditions?
How much are the reward points worth?
Do the reward points expire?
Which transactions do not earn rewards?
Can you set separate international transaction limits?
Is the card network accepted in the countries you plan to visit?
The best international credit card is one that keeps your international payments simple and affordable. Before choosing a card, check where you can use it, how currency conversion works and which charges apply. Once you understand these basics, you can use your card abroad and on international websites without unexpected costs.
Yes. You can use an international credit card for payments in India and abroad. The merchant must accept your card network.
Yes. You can use it if international online transactions are enabled and the website accepts your card network. Set a suitable transaction limit before paying.
Forex markup is an additional percentage charged by the card issuer when you make a payment in a foreign currency. It is added after the transaction is converted into Indian rupees.
Zero forex markup means the card issuer does not add a forex markup to eligible foreign-currency transactions. The card network’s applicable exchange rate will still be used.
GST can apply to the fees and charges added to an international credit card transaction, including forex markup. It is not charged on the entire purchase as a separate international transaction tax.
Pay in the merchant’s local currency. Choosing INR can lead to Dynamic Currency Conversion, which may use a higher conversion rate or include an additional margin.
The best international credit card should have zero or low forex markup, wide acceptance and benefits that match your spending. Frequent travellers may also want lounge access and travel rewards.
It depends on how you want to pay. A credit card gives you access to a credit limit and may offer rewards and travel benefits. A forex card lets you load a fixed amount before travelling, which can make it easier to manage your budget.
Eligible international transactions can earn reward points or cashback. The exact earning rate and exclusions depend on the card’s terms.
You can usually activate international transactions through your card issuer’s mobile app or internet banking service. Enable the transaction types you need and set a suitable spending limit.
