The lowest fare you see during an international flight ticket booking may not be the lowest final price. Baggage charges, seat selection, meals, convenience fees and cancellation terms can all increase the amount you pay.
For example, one ticket may cost ₹2,000 less but include no checked baggage. Once you add a bag and select a seat, it may cost more than the other option. This is why you should compare the total payable amount, not only the fare shown in search results. Here are seven practical ways to reduce your flight-booking and overall travel costs.
Start by checking the airline’s website and reliable flight-booking platforms. The fare may look similar on each website, but the final amount can change at checkout.
Check the following before you book:
Taxes and fees: Compare the complete amount after taxes, convenience fees and payment charges are added.
Baggage allowance: Check if the fare includes cabin and checked baggage. A cheaper fare may include less baggage.
Seats and meals: Find out if seat selection and meals are included or available at an additional cost.
Cancellation terms: Check how much you will lose if you cancel or change the flight.
Complete the booking process until you reach the payment page, but do not enter your payment details. This will show you the final amount charged by each platform.
Airfares can change based on the departure date, return date and demand for the route. A flight one or two days earlier may cost less.
Use the flexible-date calendar on the airline or flight-booking website. You can also set a fare alert for your route. This will notify you when the price changes.
There is no single best day to book flight tickets for every route. The date you travel, how early you search and demand for the route usually matter more than the day you make the booking.
If your travel dates are flexible, also compare weekday and weekend departures. Do not change your dates only for a small fare difference if it increases your hotel, leave or local travel costs.
Start your search early if you plan to travel during summer holidays, Diwali, Christmas, New Year or a long weekend. Demand is usually higher during these periods, and lower-priced seats can sell out.
There is no booking window that works for every destination. It depends on the route, season and demand. However, waiting until the last few weeks can leave you with fewer flight options and higher fares, especially when your dates are fixed.
When comparing international flights starting in India, check departures from nearby airports as well. For example, a traveller near Mumbai may compare fares from Mumbai, Pune and Ahmedabad. Add the cost and time needed to reach the other airport before deciding.
If the total saving is small, flying from your nearest airport may offer better value.
A connecting flight may cost less than a direct flight, but the fare difference is only one part of the decision.
Compare the travel time: Saving ₹5,000 may not be worth an additional eight-hour stop.
Check transit requirements: Some routes may require a transit visa, even if you do not leave the airport.
Include stopover costs: A long layover can add meal, lounge or hotel expenses.
Check the connection: A short gap between flights can increase the risk of missing the next flight.
Where possible, book connecting flights under one booking reference. If the first flight is delayed, the airline may provide better support for the next connection. Two separately booked tickets can leave you responsible for buying a new flight if you miss the second one.
The best international airline deals are not always the ones with the lowest base fare. Compare what each ticket includes.
Suppose one airline charges ₹42,000 and includes checked baggage, a meal and seat selection. Another charges ₹38,000 but adds ₹7,000 for the same services. The higher advertised fare gives you the lower final cost.
When comparing the best international air ticket deals, check:
Checked and cabin baggage allowances
Seat-selection charges
Meal inclusions
Cancellation and rescheduling fees
Refund rules
Total journey time
Also check whether the ticket is refundable, partly refundable or non-refundable. A slightly higher flexible fare can save money if your travel plans are uncertain.
Credit card offers on flight tickets can include an instant discount, cashback or reward points. Before using an offer, check the minimum booking amount, maximum discount and eligible booking platform.
A “10% discount” does not always mean you will save 10% on the full fare. The offer may have a low discount cap or exclude convenience fees. It may also apply only on selected days or to one booking per card.
If you regularly fly with IndiGo, the IndiGo IDFC FIRST Credit Card lets you earn IndiGo BluChips on eligible flight bookings and other spends. You also get a welcome benefit of 8,000 BluChips. IndiGo BluChips are reward points that you can redeem for IndiGo flight tickets. The number of BluChips you earn depends on the card variant and type of transaction.
Other IDFC FIRST Bank credit cards also offer bonus Reward Points on eligible flight bookings made through the IDFC FIRST Bank app. For example, the Mayura and Ashva Credit Cards offer 15X bonus Reward Points, while the FIRST Wealth, FIRST Select, FIRST Millennia and FIRST Classic Credit Cards offer 10% bonus Reward Points on eligible flight bookings. Check the card’s reward terms before paying.
A low-cost air ticket booking can become expensive once you add baggage, seats, meals and priority boarding.
Check the baggage allowance for every flight segment. This is especially important when your journey includes different airlines. The allowance on one flight may not apply to the next.
If you need extra baggage, compare the prepaid charge with the airport charge. Buying baggage online before your flight is often more practical than discovering the limit at check-in.
Add only what you need:
Checked baggage: Add it before travel if your fare does not include enough.
Seat selection: Skip it if you do not have a strong seat preference.
Meals: Add a meal only if the flight time and duration make it necessary.
Priority boarding: Pay for it only if the convenience matters to you.
Do not look only at the base fare when you book cheap air tickets online. Add the services you will actually use and then compare the final price.
Saving on your plane ticket booking is useful, but international travel costs continue after you land. Hotels, restaurants, shopping and local transport can cost more if your card charges a forex markup.
Forex markup is an extra percentage charged by a card issuer when you pay in a foreign currency.
Suppose you spend the equivalent of ₹1 lakh abroad using a card with a 3.5% forex markup. The markup will be ₹3,500. GST at 18% on the markup will add another ₹630. Your total additional cost will be approximately ₹4,130.
The cost can add up across:
Hotel stays
Dining
Shopping
Local transport
Attraction tickets
Car rentals
Your payment will still be converted into Indian rupees using the card network’s applicable exchange rate. Forex markup is an additional charge over this conversion.
All IDFC FIRST Bank credit cards offer 0% forex markup on international transactions. The benefit applies to existing and new cardholders without an upgrade or minimum-spend requirement.
This can save you approximately ₹4,130 on every ₹1 lakh spent internationally compared with a card charging a 3.5% forex markup plus GST. The card network’s conversion rate and any charges added by the merchant will still apply.
You can also continue to earn rewards or cashback on eligible international transactions based on the features and terms of your card.

FIRST WOW! Black Credit Card: This FD-backed card offers four domestic airport lounge visits per year, bonus rewards on hotel and flight bookings, and trip cancellation cover of up to ₹10,000 per year.
Compare each card’s fee, lounge access, reward structure and trip cancellation cover before applying. Choose one based on how often you travel, the airlines you use and the benefits you will actually need.
Zero forex markup will not help you avoid every type of currency conversion cost. You also need to check which currency is selected when you pay.
Dynamic Currency Conversion, or DCC, is an option offered by an overseas merchant or ATM. It lets you pay in Indian rupees instead of the local currency.
For example, a hotel in France may ask if you want to pay in euros or INR. If you choose INR, the hotel or its payment provider converts the amount using its own exchange rate. This rate may include an additional fee or margin.
DCC can appear on hotel websites, ATMs, card terminals and other international payments.
Choose the merchant’s local currency when you are given the option.
Pay in euros in France, US dollars in the US and Singapore dollars in Singapore. This lets your card network handle the currency conversion.
Check the selected currency before entering your PIN or authorising the payment. Some terminals may display INR as the more convenient option.
A zero-forex credit card does not remove a DCC cost added by the merchant. If you accept DCC, the conversion takes place before the transaction reaches your card issuer.
Before confirming your booking and starting your trip, check the following:
Compare the final fare: Check the airline’s website and reliable booking platforms.
Use flexible dates: Compare different departure and return dates.
Check nearby airports: Include the cost of reaching the alternative airport.
Compare flight types: Check the price and travel time of direct and connecting flights.
Add the extras: Include baggage, seats, meals and convenience fees.
Apply eligible offers: Check credit card discounts, cashback and rewards.
Read the fare rules: Review cancellation and rescheduling charges.
Pay in the local currency: Avoid DCC when paying abroad.
Use a zero forex card: Reduce the additional cost of eligible foreign-currency payments.
International flight ticket booking is not only about finding the lowest fare. The final cost depends on what the ticket includes, how flexible it is and which extra charges you pay before and during the trip.
Compare the complete booking amount and choose only the add-ons you need. Once you travel, pay in the local currency and check how much your card charges for foreign-currency payments. All IDFC FIRST Bank credit cards offer 0% forex markup, which can help you reduce the cost of eligible international spending.
There is no single day that always offers the lowest fare. Prices change based on the route, travel date, demand and available seats. Compare flexible dates and set fare alerts instead of waiting for a specific weekday.
Start your search early if you are travelling during school holidays, festivals, Christmas or New Year. There is no fixed booking window for every route, so track fares once your dates are clear and book when the total price suits your budget.
Compare the airline’s website with reliable booking platforms. Use flexible dates, set fare alerts and check nearby airports. Compare the total amount after adding baggage, seats, meals, convenience fees and any payment charges.
Not always. An airline may offer a lower price or better support, while a booking platform may have a discount. Compare the final price, fare rules and customer support before choosing where to book.
They can be useful if the offer applies to your booking. Check the minimum spend, discount cap, eligible platform and payment method. Also compare the amount after convenience fees instead of looking only at the advertised discount.
Choose the local currency. Selecting INR can activate Dynamic Currency Conversion, where the merchant or its payment provider sets the exchange rate. This rate may include an additional fee or margin.
Check taxes, convenience fees, payment charges, baggage fees, seat selection, meals and insurance. You should also review the airline’s cancellation, refund and rescheduling terms before making the payment.
Yes. It removes the forex markup charged by the card issuer on eligible foreign-currency transactions. You will still pay the card network’s applicable exchange rate, and merchant fees or DCC costs may still apply.
