A zero forex credit card in India is worth getting if you spend any amount in foreign currency on the ground during your trip, whether that is on meals, local transport or shopping. It adds little value if your entire trip is prepaid in INR and you rely on cash once you land. Here is a clear breakdown of when the saving is real, and when it barely matters.
A forex markup is the extra fee your card issuer charges every time a transaction is settled in a currency other than INR. It usually ranges from 1.5% to 3.5%, depending on the card you use.
This fee does not apply everywhere. If you pay in INR on an Indian platform, such as booking a hotel through an Indian travel site or paying for flights in rupees, the transaction never touches a foreign currency. In that case, comparing a forex markup credit card in India simply does not matter, since there is no markup to save on in the first place.
When does a zero-forex card actually save you money
The saving becomes real the moment your spending shifts from India to the destination itself.
Restaurants, local transport, museum entries and shopping at your destination all attract forex markup on a regular card. Say you spend THB 10,000 during your trip in Thailand, close to ₹29,000 at current exchange rates. On a card charging a 3% markup, that works out to about ₹870 in fees alone, on top of what you have already spent.
Booking a hotel directly through its own website in the local currency, rather than through an Indian platform in INR, does attract forex markup.
Local markets, supermarkets and stores add a forex markup to every transaction if your card charges one, and this adds up quickly across a trip.
Streaming services and apps billed in a foreign currency attract a monthly forex markup even when you are at home in India, well before your trip begins.
Comparing a forex markup credit card in India matters less in the situations below.
Flights and hotels booked through Indian platforms in INR carry no forex markup, regardless of which card you use to pay for them.
At destinations with low card acceptance, you are likely to rely on ATM withdrawals instead. These can still attract a separate cash advance fee.
Under ₹10,000 in foreign currency card spending saves under ₹300 at a 3% markup. For a very budget-conscious traveller, this is a limited benefit either way.
The honest verdict is that it depends on how you spend, not on the trip length or budget alone. A zero-forex credit card in India is worth it whenever any on-ground spending happens in a foreign currency, even a few meals or a direct hotel booking. It is less relevant if your trip is fully prepaid in INR and you just largely pay in cash once you land.
If you are looking for a zero-forex credit card in India specifically for travel, here are three from IDFC FIRST Bank worth considering.
| Card | Annual fee | Zero forex | Other travel benefits |
| FIRST WOW! Black | ₹750+GST | Yes | FD-backed, Bonus reward points on travel bookings, 4 Domestic airport lounges per year, personal accident insurance of up to ₹2L |
| Mayura | ₹5,999 + GST | Yes | 4 domestic and 4 international lounge visits per quarter plus 1 guest visit, trip cancellation cover of ₹50,000 per year, air accident cover of ₹1 Crore |
| Diamond Reserve | ₹3,000 + GST, waived on ₹6L annual spend | Yes | 2 domestic and 2 international lounge visits per quarter, trip cancellation cover of ₹25,000 per year, golf privileges |
Zero forex is not overhyped, it is simply situational. The benefit is most valuable the moment any part of your spending abroad happens in a foreign currency, - few meals or trips or shopping. International subscriptions are the part travellers tend to overlook but should factor in as the saving starts well before the trip itself begins. Explore IDFC FIRST Bank zero forex credit cards to find the one that fits your travel spending patterns.
A zero forex credit card does not charge the usual markup fee of 1.5% to 3.5% on transactions made in a foreign currency, so you pay closer to the actual exchange rate.
If your flights and hotels are booked in INR through Indian platforms, there is no forex markup charged on those transactions regardless of the card you use.
FIRST WOW! is a lifetime free option with zero forex, Mayura offers zero forex with premium travel benefits, and Diamond Reserve offers zero forex with lounge access, trip cancellation cover and golf privileges.
Yes, if any part of your spending happens through card in foreign currency, even modestly. It is less useful if your trip is fully prepaid in INR and you mostly use cash at the destination.
It applies whenever a transaction is processed in a currency other than INR, which is why travellers often compare a forex markup credit card in India before a trip.
