if you have moved abroad and now hold Non-Resident Indian (NRI) status, you are required to redesignate your resident savings account as a Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) account in line with FEMA and RBI regulations. What are the rules pertaining to the same, and how do you go about it? Read ahead to learn.
Once your residential status changes, you cannot continue using your regular savings account. As per FEMA and RBI guidelines, the continued usage of your resident savings account creates compliance issues. That’s why you are required to either close the resident account or convert the Resident Savings account to an NRO account.
You must do it at the earliest after attaining the NRI status. Failing to do so attracts a fine of up to three times your account balance or a ₹2 lakh fine if the amount is deemed unquantifiable. You will also get charged a penalty of ₹5,000 per day, effective from the day of non-compliance until you comply.
Besides legal compliance, the conversion of a resident account to an NRO account is also a practical decision. With NRI accounts, your banking experience back home becomes simpler. You can easily manage your Indian income via the converted NRO account and also open an additional NRE account to manage your foreign income in Indian currency.
Once your residential status has been updated, you can begin the process of conversion quickly. Before that, if you need clarity on what you can and cannot convert, here’s a quick breakdown:
You typically convert a savings account to an NRO account instead of opening a new account if you already have a functional savings account in India.
The NRO account helps you manage income like rent, dividends, pension, interest, etc., earned in India.
You don’t convert a savings account to an NRE account, but you open a new NRE account additionally, as needed.
An NRE account is meant for your foreign income that is converted and stored in Indian currency.
The process, as discussed, is fairly straightforward. Here’s how you can convert a savings account to an NRO account:
1. Initiate conversion request
Send a request for conversion from your registered mail ID to the Relationship Manager or to Customer support
2. Submit the required forms
Start by filling out the resident-to-NRO account conversion form and the NR Account Opening Form and ensure to self-sign it. This is available at the bank’s site, or you can receive it upon request. This is a formal step to initiate the conversion process and inform the bank of your NRI status.
3. Submit the required documents
Submit self-attested KYC documents – Passport, NRI Status Proof – VISA/Resident Permit, Overseas Address proof. If the request for conversion is initiated when you are already overseas and not in India, an additional step of voice verification will be carried out by the Relationship Manager. Upon successful review of the forms and documents, the existing Resident Savings Account is converted to NRO Account.
Moving abroad is a big step, and with the big step comes crucial decisions, especially with money management. You must take timely steps with your bank accounts as a starting point. This keeps you compliant and helps you avoid unwanted penalties.
When you convert your savings account to an NRO account, you can manage your income in your homeland confidently and add an NRE account if your overseas earnings call for it. Also, with banks like IDFC FIRST Bank, the ease of onboarding and account management is unmatched.
