Personal Loan
When a lender approves your application for a personal loan, the first document you receive is a formal approval letter confirming the good news. This letter called the sanction letter confirms that the lender has reviewed your income, credit profile, and documents, and has approved the loan on specific terms.
Understanding this letter closely helps you plan repayments, compare offers, and move ahead with clarity before the funds reach your account.
The letter usually reaches you through an email or the lender's app soon after approval, and well before the loan agreement is signed or the amount is transferred.
Think of it as a written summary of everything discussed during the application: the amount, tenure, rate, and repayment structure. It gives you time to review these details and decide whether to proceed.
The components of loan sanction letter are:
Application number: A unique reference number used to track your application and for future correspondence with the lender
Approved amount: The maximum sum the lender is willing to disburse based on your income and eligibility
Interest rate: The applicable rate, whether fixed or floating, along with how it is calculated
Loan tenure: The repayment period, usually expressed in months, within which the loan must be repaid
EMI details: The monthly instalment amount along with the repayment schedule and due dates
Fees: Any fee deducted from the loan amount or charged above, along with other applicable charges such as foreclosure or late payment fees
Terms and conditions: Clauses covering prepayment, default, and other conditions that apply through the tenure
Validity period: The window within which you must accept the offer and complete disbursement formalities
Sanction letter vs disbursement is a common point of confusion for first-time borrowers, since both feel like approvals but serve different purposes. The table below shows the difference between them:
| Aspect | Sanction letter | Loan disbursement |
| Stage | Issued after credit and document approval | Happens after agreement signing and final checks |
| Purpose | Confirms loan terms and approved amount | Transfers the approved funds to your account |
| Legal status | Not binding on its own | Backed by a signed loan agreement |
| Timing | Comes before disbursement | Comes after the letter is accepted |
| Documents needed | Minimal, based on the initial application | Additional documents may be needed before transfer |
| Finality | Can be revised or withdrawn before disbursement | Marks the loan as active, and repayment begins |
In short, sanction letter vs disbursement comes down to timing and finality; one confirms approval on paper, the other puts money in your account.
In the case of FIRSTmoney personal loan, you will receive an approved loan offer ready for use. You can choose to withdraw from your approved loan offer multiple times, as per your convenience and available loan offer. Interest is charged only on the amount you actually withdraw. You can also foreclose any withdrawn loan without any penalty. The closed loan amount gets added back to your available loan offer, once all the EMIs of that loan are repaid.
Validity of a personal loan sanction letter differs by lender, but it usually ranges from 15 days to 6 months from the date of issue. Within this window, you can accept the terms, submit any pending documents, and complete the loan agreement to move towards disbursement.
Checking the exact validity mentioned in your letter helps you plan your next steps, especially if you are comparing offers from multiple lenders and want to time your decision well.
Reviewing the components of loan sanction letter carefully is not just a formality, it protects you as a borrower in several ways:
Confirms approval terms: Gives written proof of the amount, rate, and tenure agreed upon before you commit further
Enables comparison: Lets you compare offers from multiple lenders before signing a final agreement
Reference for accuracy: Acts as a clear reference point for the agreed terms throughout the loan agreement and EMI schedule
Supports planning: Helps you plan monthly cash flow around the EMI and tenure mentioned in the letter
Aids correspondence: The application number and reference details simplify any follow-up with the lender
The personal loan sanction letter marks a key milestone in your borrowing journey: the gap between approval and disbursement of your loan. Reading it carefully, understanding its components, and noting its validity period helps you move through disbursement with clarity.
IDFC FIRST Bank has shortened this journey with FIRSTmoney, a 100% digital personal loan that takes borrowers from application to disbursal within 10 minutes through the app or website, with no paperwork or branch visit needed. All your loan related documents are easily accessible via the Bank app anytime you want to view or download them.
You review and accept the terms in the letter, submit any pending documents, sign the loan agreement, and complete verification. Once these steps are done, the lender disburses the approved amount to your account.
Increasing the amount after approval usually means restarting the process, since a higher amount needs fresh assessment. Some lenders may allow a top-up request instead, which is evaluated separately.
