As a Credit Card holder, you may have seen numbers on the face of your Credit Card. The numbers have unique significance that tells more than your identification details
A credit card usually has between 14 to 16 digits. The numbers are unique for every cardholder and signify the type of credit card account. The credit card number is discrete, carrying unique meaning and valuable information. For instance, the first few digits identify the type of card. The rest of the numbers helps identify your account and payment channels, including domestic or international card information.
What is a Credit Card number, and where can you find it?
All credit cards are printed with 14 to 16 digits grouped in four. You can find the numbers on the front side of the card. Since the numbers are generated using the same system worldwide, they are structured similarly throughout.

The first Credit Card number
The first six numbers identify the credit card industry or the card issuer. The first digit is known as Major Industry Identifier (MII). Some popular MII are airlines, petroleum, travel and entertainment, banking, finances, etc.
The next five Credit Card numbers
The next five credit card numbers are known as Issuers' Identification Number (IIN) or the Bank Identification Number (BIN). It identifies the bank or the credit card company it originates from. The numbers following the BIN carry the account holder's information.
The next 9–12 Credit Card numbers
The remaining digits on the credit card usually identify the account holder's information. Your account number can have between 9-12 digits.
The last number
The last number is usually for verifying a valid card, also known as a checksum. The check number is created by an algorithm known as Luhn Algorithm. The last number on your credit card checks the genuineness of your account.
A credit card consists of discrete numbers representing valuable information. Everything is mentioned in the credit card number, from cardholder details to issuing authority and industry.
How are Credit Card numbers generated?
Luhn Algorithms generate credit card numbers. A card number is valid only if it satisfies the Luhn check. All credit card companies follow the same algorithm to generate a new credit card number, minimising fraudulent transactions and credit card frauds.
A credit card number uniquely identifies the cardholder, issuing authority and the industry type it belongs to. As a cardholder, you must know the numbers to avoid fraud. You can also verify your credit card number by contacting the credit card issuing institution.
