Savings Account
An active and operational bank account allows you to manage your banking and financial activities smoothly and without interruption. If your bank account is frozen, you lose access to your funds and cannot make deposits or withdrawals, either online or at a branch. This situation can disrupt your regular financial activities.
Banks or central authorities may freeze your account for several reasons, and you will be notified through official communication. In this blog, we will discuss why a savings account might be frozen, how to check if it has been, and what steps you can take to unfreeze your bank account.
The bank or the central authorities may freeze your bank account for the following reasons:
As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), all bank account holders (existing and new) must complete the Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements with their respective banks. Non-compliance with KYC norms can result in temporary account freezing.
In cases of non-filing of taxes, improper filings, or tax fraud, the Indian Income Tax Department or other investigative agencies can instruct the bank to freeze your account. Your account may remain frozen until the issue in question is resolved.
If government authorities identify any illegal activities, such as money laundering routed through your account, they can instruct the bank to freeze it. If the bank suspects suspicious activity, such as large withdrawals without proper identity verification, it may freeze the account for security reasons.
If a bank or any of the National Payments Corporation experiences non-payment of dues by you in consecutive payment cycles, they may request the bank to freeze your account.
Typically, the bank will notify you in advance if your account will be frozen but an advance notice may not always be extended. However, if suspicious activity is detected, the account may be frozen immediately. In either case, the following are common ways to find out your bank account is frozen:
The bank will send an SMS, email, or even a formal letter to your registered contact and residential address. Initially, these will be alerts stating the reason for freezing your account. If there is no response from you, the bank may finally freeze the account and send a formal communication to that effect. Note that the bank will not wait for a response in all cases.
At the time of making a transaction or payment, whether offline or online, it may fail to process. The failure headline will be accompanied by the frozen bank account message on the POS, ATM screen, or net/mobile banking screen.
If you have a dedicated relationship manager for your bank account, in certain cases they may contact you through your official details to communicate the concern. However, the bank will not contact you in all cases.
Following is a mention of common ways to unfreeze your bank account:
Contact the bank’s customer executive or visit your nearest branch to find out why your account was frozen.
Once you know the reason, take steps to resolve the issue and get an unfrozen bank account. For instance, if the reason is non-compliance with KYC norms, it can be solved by completing Re-KYC. This ensures the requirement is completed without causing you any further hassles.
The bank or a central authority has the power to freeze your account for non-compliance with KYC requirements, tax liabilities, illegal or suspicious activities, or non-payment of dues. When the bank freezes your account, you cannot access it. You cannot make deposits or withdrawals using any method, whether offline or online. Reach out to the bank to have your account unfrozen.
Yes, the bank freezes an inactive or dormant account
Account freezing can be communicated days in advance or immediately, depending on the reason. For reasons such as non-compliance with KYC or non-payment of dues, the bank notifies the account holder several times before freezing the account. If you do not respond or provide a resolution, the account will be frozen. In the case of suspicious activity, the account is frozen immediately for security reasons.
Contact the bank’s customer service representative or visit the nearest branch to unfreeze your account.
